WELCOME HOME IVY JANE - CD
Brock Zeman may only be twenty-five years old, but already he’s released three previous albums with his signature roots style, and been praised by critics for the maturity of his vocals, the depth of his storytelling and his impressive live performances – which he shares with audiences widely and regularly, across North America and Europe. His fourth album, Welcome Home Ivy Jane, produced by Keith Glass of Prairie Oyster fame, along with Zeman and Steve Foley at Audio Valley in Perth, cements Zeman’s talent as a songwriter who balances the grit of everyday life with a lyrical heart. Sung in his deep, rich and twangy vocals and backed by a first rate band, Zeman is, as one reviewer has said, “certainly a rising star” (Atlantic Seabreeze).
Zeman’s vocals often illicit immediate comparisons to Americana greats; Country Music News has said that Zeman has “a voice that begs to be compared to Steve Earle” while Rootshighway claims that “Brock Zeman should have been born in Austin Texas.” But it is Zeman’s songwriting that makes the comparisons to the great singer-songwriters stick.
Tracks like “Better Half” and “In Days Ahead” are catchy, singable, packed with emotion – and wisdom -- but grounded in Zeman’s straight forward vocals and heavy acoustic guitar. While so much new music is deliberately ‘alternative’ and aimed at niche audiences, Zeman is not afraid to write songs that would appeal to everyone. Tracks like “Cindy” and “Chanelle” tell tales of love lost, regret and longing, songs of heartbreak that we can all relate to, and sing along with.
Zeman also knows when to feature his impressive band. Keith Glass, co-producer, also joins Zeman as a ‘Dirty Hand’ (guitar/mandolin/harmony), along with
Peter Newsom (bass, harmony), Peter Bigras (drums), Steve Smith (dobro, pedal steel), Dennis Keldi (organ), Allistar Dennett (drums, percussion) and Mark Bailey (trumpet). They don’t so much ‘back’ Zeman as form a tight roots-country ambiance that Zeman wades into.
Peter North of the Edmonton Sun has said of a previous album of Zeman’s (Cold Winter Comes Back) that “this is one of the best singer/songwriter records I’ve heard in a long time!” Americana UK has said of a previous album (Songs from the Mud) that “Brock creates songs that stand out...[it] is a great, consistently strong record and one that elevates Zeman into the pantheon of top notch Canadian singer-songwriters” (Americana UK). Welcome Home Ivy Jane will only reinforce Zeman’s place in the roster of performers to watch out for.
Local Ottawa music magnet, Paul Symes, owner of the Black Sheep Inn, says that Brock Zeman “clearly ranks with the best emerging Texas/US singer-songwriters that we have encountered here at Blacksheep: Adam Carroll, Hayes Carll, Chris Knight and Slaid Cleaves. Just like them, he's got fistfuls of ferociously good songs and he's not afraid to use 'em. In many ways, he reminds me of a kid Fred Eaglesmith: great stories, fine melodies, a wicked sense of humour. It is just a matter of time before the world gets it, so tune in now before we lose him to the U, S and Ayyy. "

BROCK ZEMAN & THE DIRTY HANDS - CD
BROCK ZEMAN'S 3RD RELEASE. PRODUCED BY KEITH GLASS AND BROCK ZEMAN. THE DIRTY HANDS (KEITH GLASS, PETER NEWSOM & PETER BIGRAS) WERE BROUGHT TOGETHER @ O'REILLY'S IN PERTH ONTARIO, WHERE THEY HELD DOWN A WEEKLY GIG WITH BROCK ZEMAN FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS. THEY LEARNT THESE SONG'S ON THE FLY AS ZEMAN WROTE THEM.
"Brock Zeman a singer/ songwriter from Carleton Place Ontario debuted only a couple years ago with the highly-acclaimed Cold Winter Comes Back album, followed that up with his Songs From The Mud cd; and already into his third album with his latest collection, with his biting song lyrics which are reminiscent of the messages contained in a John Prine song; and a voice that begs to be compared to Steve Earle. Nice company to keep...but it's a neighborhood that gets little respect or attention from mainstream country radio. There are many highlight moments on the album. Brock Zeman seems to have already recognized the dilemma he faces with his music getting played on the radio, he opens up with the statement song Nothing On The Radio. The song title pretty much tells you where he's going with the song...and he stresses the point with the lyrics: "It's a good thing Hank ain't alive today." Quick learner this Brock Zeman!!
Zeman also scores nicely here with the rock n' roll/ rockabilly tune Raise Your Hands, and some bluesy efforts in Blood Of Christ Blues and Two Steps Back. He shows flexibility in the slow melencoly My Heaven and the haunting song Bones. Danny's Song (The Fiddler's Gone Home) is a poignant tribute to musician friend Danny O'Connell who recently took his own life; while the Steve Ealre Vocal comparison is best felt in the song Small Town Tongues. The comparison to John Prine's can best be appreciated in the albums closing song Talking Reality Show Blues.
We also get a rare occurence on a Brock Zeman album...a cover tune. This time it's the Townes Van Zandt nugget White Freight Liner Blues. The song Amanda is a Zeman original and not a cover of the Bob McDill tunes popularized Don Williams and by Waylon Jennings.
Like previous releases from Brock Zeman this album was produced by Keith Glass ( of Prairie Oyster fame ) and recorded at Audio Valley Studio in Perth Ontario."

SONGS FROM THE MUD - CD
BROCK ZEMAN'S 2ND RELEASE. DARK AND BROODING TALES WITH A STRIPPED DOWN, BLUEGRASS APPROACH. PRODUCED BY KEITH GLASS."Songs From the Mud is Brock Zemans second album and one on which he has gone back to acoustic basics with some fairly spectacular results. The album consists of 14 tracks, one of which is a cover (Dark as a Dungeon by Merle Travis). He sings of the devil, mining and outlaws with the authority of somebody much older and more experienced. On Scarecrow Blues, Zeman even sounds like the slightly younger brother of Tom Waits. Songs From the Mud is a great, consistently strong record and one that elevates Zeman into the pantheon of top notch Canadian singer song writers. 8 out of 10"
