BROCKZEMAN: MUSIC

Down By The River

(Brock Zeman)
Charlie Wright s life turned out all wrong
It went like the words to a country song
Walking down main with a wino s swagger
Sucking from a brown bag down by the river
There goes Charlie now wondering what went wrong
His life is like a guitar that wont keep tune
Covered in dust in some old attic room
Every time you touch it it seems to get worse
Till you wonder if the whole damn thing ain t cursed
And the player only knows those old hurting tunes

And down by the river where a bottle of wine
Can t stop the tears flowing from his eyes
His Mama always told him
Things ll turn out fine
But even mothers at times have been known
To tell little white lies

Sherry was the apple of her Daddy s eyes
And a punching bag after a little sip of rye
She makes a living off a sick man s fantasy
Wondering up and down main-street
There she goes now trying to find some company for tonight
Her life can t seem to get no worse
She keeps a loaded pistol hidden in her purse
She feels like the star of a long bad dream
Where the currents pulling her down and she can t do a thing
And every car that pulls up beside her looks like a hearse

One day Charlie was drinking by the riverbank
When he heard something that made his heartstrings break
He looked around for what he could find
When he saw Sherry crying out of two black eyes
He said, Hush there darling things ain t as bad as you think
With the sleeve of his coat he dried all her tears
And said the first tender words she d heard in years
And as he looked into her two green eyes
He threw away his half drunk bottle of wine
And that was the start of so many happy years

Now down by the river they sit side by side
With tears of laughter flowing from their eyes
Their mothers always told them things would turn out fine
And don t it look like Mama was right.
