I had a girl named Sherry Dunn
She was just as pretty as a setting sun
And twice as wild as a hurricane
It seemed to me things were going fine
She was always dancing through my mind
I needed her like an addict needs his cocaine
I started seeing her with old Eddie Hart
Toughest man around these parts
And one night he said: boy you and her are through
The words wouldn't come no matter what I tried
Cause I was all torn up inside
You see, a boy like Eddie will leave you black and blue
I tried to kill the pain with drinking hard
Down at the local bar
And one night Eddie walked in with Sherry on his arm
They started drinking and laughing it up
While my heart was pounding like a bass drum
And I just sat there listening to them carrying on
When I'd had enough I got up to leave
And Eddie hollered out after me:
Bartender, I'll get a drink for the kid
It was then that I started seeing red
And I smashed that bottle over his head
And started kicking him till I was sure he wasn't getting up again
You know I ain't the violent kind
But I know there's gonna come a time
When something inside me is gonna crack
A man can only take so much
And when he finally finds he's had enough
You best be sure that you ain't the one walking on his back
My friends told me to watch my back
And I can't say I never expected that
I had no money and I had no place to run
No matter what I tried I couldn't get no sleep
Because I knew that he'd be coming for me
And I'd be waiting on him with a loaded gun
I heard someone coming through the window one night
And there wasn't no doubt in my mind
So I fired a shot in the dark and I heard him hit the floor
But when I hit the light Sherry was lying there
With blood all running from her hair
What she'd come for I guess I'll never know.
