Me and Cindy had us a little farm at the end of a long winding road
A little money coming in from the crops and cows but it always trickled in a little slow
Things get hard when the winter months come and living gets closer to the bone
Trying to keep wood in the stove and food on the table and my head above the snow
Cindy walks around moaning and groaning about there being nothing to do
But I ain't got no time for sympathy when I'm working like a mule
Lately she's had a look in her eyes but it ain't no look of love
And any fool can tell it's just a matter of time before she'll be running off
The fence around my spread falls over every year from the ice and wind
And year by year I gotta put it back together just to have it fall down again
And every little stone upon that fence is made of toil and aching bones
And underneath there's a couple of things ain't nobody ever gonna know
Then Cindy started going to town with a few of her friends
The phone would ring while we were sleeping and I pick it up but there'd be nobody on the other end
One night I tailed her when she went out and it was just like I thought
She stopped outside some strange house and some man got in my truck
I headed right home and I poured a drink I was just trying to calm down
But something came over me when the front door opened and she walked into the house
My heart was pounding like a freight train and the devil was shoveling coal
And silence fell upon the house when my hands fell from her throat
Tomorrow night when the cows are in and all the work is done
I'm gonna hop in the truck and go to town with my Daddy's old Remington
And just on the outskirts of town I'm gonna pay a visit to a man
I figure there's room for just one more underneath my fence
